Course Overview
IWCF Level 2 Drilling Well Control is an introductory program for wellsite operational team members that may contribute to the creation, detection, or control of a well influx but are not responsible for independent well shut-in. The course covers:
-
Basic principles of drilling well control
-
BOP stack and equipment overview (surface & subsea)
-
Kick detection, shut-in techniques, and contingency basics
-
Simple well control calculations
-
Safety protocols and standard procedures in well control operations
Training Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
-
Describe the purpose and types of drilling operations and recognize key well control concepts
-
Identify causes and warning signs of a kick (well control problem) and respond appropriately
-
Demonstrate understanding of hydrostatic, formation, and fracture pressure
-
Explain and implement concepts of primary and secondary well control
-
Assist in routine rig-up, operation, and testing of BOPs and well control equipment (surface & subsea)
-
Recognize the role of barriers and risk management in well integrity
-
Perform basic pressure calculations and appreciate the need for correct figures to ensure safety
-
Demonstrate awareness of well control safety practices, procedures, and compliance standards
Designed For
-
Level 2 (Introductory): Roustabouts, Roughnecks, Derrickmen, Barge Engineers, BOP/Subsea Engineers, Mud Loggers, Wellsite Drilling Data Engineers, and other junior or support staff who may contribute to well control responses but do not have shut-in responsibility
